The Middle Atlas and Cedar Fores
Starting from Fes, this day trip takes you to the Middle Atlas and Cedar Forest, where you'll visit Azrou, a Berber village at 1250 meters above sea level, known for its traditional houses, and Ifrane, often referred to as Morocco's "Little Switzerland." Ifrane: Nestled among mountains at 1650 meters, Ifrane was built in 1930 with a European design and offers a pleasant atmosphere year-round, ideal for fresh air. Originally established by the French in 1929 as a resort inspired by alpine architecture, it features a Royal Palace, Al Akhawayn University, a military school, and luxury villas surrounded by lush greenery. Perfect for both summer and winter sports, the town boasts a central lake, scenic forests, and the famous Ifrane Lion sculpture, a tourist favorite. Historic features like original houses, the post office, and the church from the protectorate era still stand, alongside the Ville Jardin district with summer homes and tourist complexes. Azrou: Recognized for its white buildings and friendly locals, Azrou offers artisan shops, cafes, a small medina with green-accented houses, a lively souk selling carpets, wooden crafts, and spices, and the remains of a 17th-century kasbah. The Hassan II Mosque, with its cedar roof, is located near a unique rock that inspired the town's name. Known for its stunning views, Azrou is a popular destination with a thriving cedarwood handicraft industry. Be sure to check out the Atlas carpets and the handicraft center on the Khenifra road.
