Explore the blue city of Chefchaouen
Our one-day trip from Fes to Chefchaouen begins at 8:00 AM from your accommodation in Fes. We’ll travel north in an air-conditioned vehicle for three hours to reach the charming town of Chefchaouen. Along the way, you’ll be captivated by the stunning views of the Rif Mountains and the rolling hills of Ouezzane, with stops to enjoy the scenery, the fresh air, and some photo opportunities.
Nestled inland from Tangier and Tetouan, Chefchaouen, or Chaouen as locals call it, was established as a fortress in the 1400s. It’s famous for its picturesque blue-washed houses, artisanal wool products, and delicious goat cheese. The town’s name comes from the mountain peaks above it, resembling goat horns (chaouen). Its abundance of water forms a network of mineral-rich caves surrounding the mountains.
Pause at a mountain viewpoint for a breathtaking panorama of Chefchaouen before arriving at 12:00 PM. You’ll have four hours to wander the town’s narrow, winding streets. Explore the medina, showcasing Arab-Andalusian traditions, and visit the central Plaza Uta El-Hammam, home to the impressive 15th-century Grand Mosque and kasbah. The mosque, with its unique octagonal tower, was built by Jewish refugees who fled Spanish persecution alongside Muslims. Learn about the area’s history and culture at the Kasbah Museum or Ethnographic Museum, which display musical instruments, antique weapons, and historical photographs.
Be sure to visit the iconic Ras El-Maa Waterfall, where you can enjoy the fresh air, the calming sound of flowing water, and the lush green hills. A short hike uphill leads to the Spanish Mosque, offering breathtaking views of the town. Grab lunch in the square or at a rooftop restaurant while soaking in the atmosphere, or cool off with a riverside meal on a warm day. In the late afternoon, we’ll head back to Fes, arriving in the evening.
